Lohri
Night 2007
Kansas City: The Punjabi community of
metropolitan Kansas City celebrated the Lohri festival on a
grand scale on Saturday, January 20th, at the Shawnee Civic
Center in Shawnee, Kansas. The Punjabi Cultural Society of
Heartland organized the Lohri celebration event. Despite bad
weather, over 300
people attended this celebration featuring traditional Bhangra
(Punjabi folk dance) Dance, traditional Gidha (Punajbi folk
dance of women) Dance, and other dances with Punjabi songs
& Hindi Songs. The community participation and quality of the
performances were outstanding!
The highlight of the evening
was seeing people of all ages sharing and celebrating
the traditional culture together through music and dancing in
harmony. This, in fact, was a great family event as children,
uncles, aunts, relatives, parents, and grandparents attended
it together.
Satrang DJ Entertainment and Jamey provided the traditional Desi music.
The catering service was provided by India Palace Restaurant. All
participants of the dance competition received PCS T-Shirts.
Four of the performances chosen from the competition were
awarded prizes.

Vaisakhi
Night Event
Kansas City: The Punjabi community of Kansas City
metropolitan area celebrated Vaisakhi Night on a grand scale
on Saturday, May 28, at VFW Hall in Lenexa, Kansas.
Sukhdarshan Dhaliwal welcomed the audience. The celebration
went on from 7:00pm till midnight. The Punjabi Cultural
Society (PCS) of Heartland organized this traditional Punjabi
Cultural program. Approximately 450 people attended this event
featuring Bhangra (Punjabi folk dance) and individual and
group dances to the tune of Hindi & Punjabi music. Also,
the Gidha (a kin of Bhangra) team mesmerized the audience and
it was the highlight of the event. The community participation
and quality of the performances were
outstanding!
It was a scenic view to observe people from all age groups
dancing, sharing, and celebrating the traditional event
together in harmony. It was especially heartening to see a
great number of non-Punjabi people. This, in fact was a great
family event as children, uncles, aunts, relatives, parents,
and grandparents attended it together.
DJ Apana Sangeet played Punjabi and Hindi music. Taj Mahal and
Sawagat Restaurants provided catering services along with
Karnail S. Dulku. Jasbir Singh Sidhu of "Mr. Goodcents"
provided paper plates and Sitkaar Foods of Shawnee helped with
logistics.
The success of this event can easily be attributed to
following volunteers: Karnail Singh Dulku, Uttam Garg, Binder
Singh Sangha, Amarjit Singh, Jasmine K. Dhaliwal, Daljit K.
Dhaliwal, Darshan K. Dulku, Simi Grewal, Budh Singh, Mandeep
Singh Sidhu, Kalwinder S. Atwal, Paramjit Kaur, Sohan Singh,
Pritpal Singh Grewal, Harjinder Singh of Taj
Mahal, Larry, Piara Singh, and Sukhdarshan Dhaliwal.
The PCS of Heartland is a non-profit organization devoted to
promoting Punjabi cultural, literary, linguistic, artistic,
and educational interests throughout the Greater Kansas City
and surrounding areas. We are now looking forward to celebrate
Lohri in January, 2006.
